Five Content Marketing Mistakes That Quietly Waste SME Budgets
1. Publishing for a content calendar, not a customer question
If a piece of content doesn’t map to a real question your buyer is asking at a specific stage of their decision, it’s unlikely to earn traffic or influence a sale, regardless of how well it’s written.
2. No distribution plan beyond publishing
Publishing is the beginning of a content asset’s life, not the end. Content without a paid, email, or partner distribution plan behind it relies entirely on organic discovery, which is slow and increasingly competitive.
3. Ignoring how AI answer engines will use the content
Content written purely for human skimming often buries the actual answer under preamble. Increasingly, that same content needs to be easily extractable by AI systems too: clear, direct claims near the top of the page perform better on both fronts.
4. Measuring traffic instead of pipeline influence
Page views are the easiest metric to track and the least useful one on their own. Tying content back to influenced pipeline, even imperfectly, changes which topics get prioritized.
5. Treating every piece as evergreen
Content decays. Statistics go stale, product details change, and competitors catch up. A content library without a refresh cadence slowly loses the rankings and trust it originally earned.
None of these fixes require a bigger budget, just a more deliberate process around the budget you already have.
